Doctoral candidate Yucheng Bai will graduate this May with the Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies. His dissertation “American City on a Chinese Hill: American Fundamentalism in Contemporary Chinese Christianity” was defended recently with his committee Xi Lian (chair), Grant Wacker, Chloë Starr, and Anna Sun attending.
Bai has a Bachelor of Arts from University of Arizona, a Master of Arts from Columbia University, and a Master of Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School. Besides his native tongue of Mandarin Chinese and his expert English, he also reads in classical Chinese and German and has elementary Japanese skills.
Bai has a co-authored book forthcoming in 2025, (with Ren Xiaopeng) Rongyao yu zhongfu: Meiguo jidujiao jianshi [The Glory and the Burden: A Brief History of American Christianity). He has at least five published academic works and at least two non-academic published works. and has given at least eight conference presentations in various locations and has given a couple of public lectures (in Chinese) with Fulemi Forum.
Bai’s teaching experience includes the titles Senior Writing Coach and Preceptor in Duke Divinity School and Teaching Assistant, Guest Lecturer, and Instructor for the Department of Religious Studies in Arts & Sciences.
Interestingly, Bai got married to a student in Duke Divinity's ThM degree program last May. We hope the best for their future.
