Julian of Norwich’s Vernacular Theology of Grace: A Seminar with Julia Lamm

Julia A. Lamm, Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at Georgetown University, will lead a seminar on her recent book, God's Kinde Love: Julian of Norwich's Vernacular Theology of Grace (Herder & Herder, 2019), which is the first full-scale study of Julian's doctrine of grace. Julian of Norwich developed a sophisticated, multifaceted doctrine of grace that reflected a profound knowledge of the theological tradition; at the same time, she resisted the dominant theological tradition and its established socio-political alignments, and she offered instead a new theological paradigm: that of "God's kinde love." Professor Lamm will discuss the writing of the book, and participants are encouraged to read some chapters and bring reflections and questions for discussion.

Julia Lamm is a historical and systematic theologian specializing on Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834), Julian of Norwich (1343-ca. 1416), Christian mysticism, the doctrines of God and grace, Christology, and the relation between theology and philosophy. Her newest book is Schleiermacher's Plato (DeGruyter, 2021).
